ask any local like the person in LA is saying from his crack den he shares with kb and sm - cursing those that dont "believe" in spending any more money on the meade mount reef. they should give up the 'halluciagens" that the computer screens make them believe they are taking - scientists that mark their exam papers -surly somethings amiss with that? when it comes to delluding themselves its no problem - but when they try and represent it as "the truth" to others around th eworld in an attempt to gain money it just adds to the legal criminal case being made against them. It just a matter of proving that they missused money intended to be spent properly on what they were saying they could be trusted with ... uuuuhhhh proff needed for that ????

I notice that KB is "inviting " more work on the reef by saying that it can always be added to and a grommet from "his office" reports catching a wave there once sometime in the past. so everyone the height of arrogance and "out of touch with reality" has spoken -give more as it can be "improved"
everyting will catch up to them in a manner that the authorities deem correct -so complain complain loudly about the lies on lies , deceit and arrogance and the straight out "deliberate negligence " in dissmissing an expert hydrodynamic engineers advice that what has happened with their design was going to happen and people have since drowned because of it . That takes acedemic arrogance into another level of infidelity with the surfing community that they made some many promises to.

what another one in difficulties -is there no end to the ineptnessthat must be involved in getting this stuf done properly - the cost increase -oh dear thats something new -a country trying to feed its few must coem up with more money -perhaps some real estate might have to be "traded in' to cover commitements.

Though the artificial reef is planned to nurture the beach, it has the potential to benefit ecology and tourism. The concept had the support of the people’s representatives, local self-governments, residents, community organisations, business groups and the scientific community. Though, almost a year has passed since the contract was signed and the machinery and the construction team from New Zealand has arrived, the Government has not released any amount so far.
Joseph Mathew, director of ASR Ltd, said that while the sea wall cannot effectively prevent sea erosion, the artificial reefs can do the job better, apart from nurturing the beach. He pointed out that over 400 km of the sea coast of Kerala was protected by sea walls. But it has been causing destruction to the remaining beaches of the State. He said the State could have nurtured beaches if it had built reefs, instead of opting for sea walls. The reefs would also provide ideal conditions for sea surfing.
He said that if we provide ideal conditions for sea surfing, at least 50,000 foreign tourists could be attracted to Kovalam a year.
The artificial reef will have a length of 110 m, breadth of 35 m and a volume of 4,300 cubic metres. The reef will produce a 100-m long surfing ride.
The Kovalam reef is to be constructed using large sand-filled mega containers made from an extremely durable geo-textile material. It will also provide a natural habitat for marine organisms.
It was on March 3, 2008 that the Tourism Department of the State Government had signed a contract with the ASR Ltd for the setting up of the Multi-purpose Reef at Kovalam. The project was to be completed within 10 months from the date of site handover. The project report was submitted to the Tourism Department in early July 2008. The environmental committee and the technical committee approved the technical study. But the matter has been pending with the Tourism Department since September 2008.
Joseph Mathew said that they had brought the reef construction equipment, barge and boats from Mumbai. A 12-member construction team from New Zealand also had arrived by mid-December. Though the Tourism Department had to release almost half of the project cost of Rs 7.8 crore as per the contract, till now it has not released any amount.
The contractors had been relying on the assurance given by the Tourism Secretary and Director for importing the geo-textile and other materials required for the project. They have already spent Rs 4 crore.
The Government had given administrative sanction for only Rs 4 crore. But as per the revised estimate, the project cost has jumped to Rs 7.8 crore. Joseph Mathew said that the state-level empowered committee (SLEC) chaired by the Chief Secretary also had approved the project. He said as the Government was not honouring the contract, his company had asked him to stop the work. Any further delay in releasing the amount would force them to give up the project, he added.

The concept warns that the western part of Oakura Beach is now being affected by coastal erosion, and that major consequences of doing nothing may be the loss of prime areas of the camping ground.
In addition, there would a significant risk of failure of parts of Oakura's multi-million-dollar sewerage system now being built, which would result in high environmental health risks.
"A pipeline, holding tank and pumping station are under construction along the Beach Block lower terrace," says the development concept, referring to that part of the Oakura camping ground where most of the tent sites are currently located.
"This infrastructure is regarded as a `significant council asset' which is located near to the original shoreline. As erosion threats escalate, the need for intervention to safeguard this infrastructure and the camping ground business viability will become a priority."
The development concept confirms that the council already has a report - called the Oakura Structure Plan - that suggests construction of an artificial reef would help overcome the erosion threat.
"Intervention options ... are an artificial offshore reef structure to optimise sand retention on the beach, resulting in a wider beach that will be managed as a natural dune area and natural realignment of the foreshore as part of natural processes," it says.
District council parks programmes manager Steve McGill yesterday said the Oakura Structure Plan identified various options for the future of Oakura Beach. The reef idea was one of them, he added.
"Such a reef would not necessarily be made of geotech bags - it might be rocks," he said.
"But it all reflects the fact that awareness of erosion of Oakura Beach has grown in the past couple of years. The plan identifies options to help protect the beach."
One of the options was to simply leave things as they are, and allow the Oakura foreshore to realign itself as part of natural processes. The other was to build an artificial reef, he said.

Hi, haven't posted here as it's been a lake. No surf whatsoever, attached are last photo's taken Monday. Almost dead-low tide.
if you look the direct image show two buoys with a random shorebreak right crossing inside the reef area - uninfluenced by the bathymetery of the reef just outside. it's like the reef is completely non-existant.
But the other image taken from exact same spot is looking 150 meters to the right, I left one of the reef buoys in the extreme left of the image for your visual reference, it clearly shows working natural waves, with surfers all over them.
So if our reef works - why are all the surfers enjoying waves 150m down the beach, and the reef has a) no-one using it and b)no waves.
This is exactly the natural conditions this reef was intended to "improve", to make a nice natural 2-3 foot beachbreak better, create a repeatable a-frame peak firing-off from the same spot each time, with a use window of 2-3 hours either side of low tide.

yes please and we are all obliged for your effort in revealing whats really happening.
The words "the mount manganui reef is a outstanding sucess' have no relevence to the real world and your efforts show what the real world is.
-it is very informative and helpfull for people to see the truth rather than hear 'distorted commercial spin" from those that believe they have things to hide.
the reef is an abomination against nature, surfing and the oceans nearshore process's
the people who said it was otherwise have a little knowledge and that in their case makes them dangerous -on the hole they just dont know what they are doing and are incapable of recognising that.
Unfortunatley for surfing and beaches they have created havok and mayhem with natural process's and the full cost of damage and the compensation they should pay is still unfolding.
I think all the good wasted surfing chances that the reef has "ruined" and "screwed up" forever on its own may be hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damages that they should have to compensate surfers and the community for.
I hope someone is tracking their assets for when they get "siezed" as "ill gotten gains" (charge is false pretences in saying that one knows what ones are doing - a very serious serious crime against surfing, surfers and the environment)
why that -well their results speaks for itself.
