your worst localism experience?

i for the first time got some bad vibes in the water out in huntington beach at the santa ana jetty by 'locals' im assuming. I'm 10 mins away from my local beach but I wouldn't call myself a local. I honestly don't really care too much about localism and attitudes and things they might give off, I'm a little too old for that kind of stuff just seems a bit trivial as long as everyones being respectful. but I'm just curious to hear some entertaining stories...

hah yes i did see that one. that guy arguably deserved to be put down though by a real local. but still pretty brutal.

I have never had that problem with locals any place I have been. I don't go where they are. For one thing I am not good enough to get in the middle of a crowed or line up.

That video is disgusting - and as one comment points out - the idiots standing around filming and laughing are pure scum and should be ashamed!!

Whatever the reason why the guy was in the water, what happened on the beach afterwards was disgraceful and I can't see what would have provoked the beating he got!!

The only 'localism' I've ever noticed was from uni students in Anglesey who, despite only being transient 'locals' love to claim breaks as their own!!

Ya we get that here as well. I have been glared at etc for taking off on waves when i had position/priority

Iam a local at my beach as i surf there everyday and for the most part the scene is pretty laid back but you do get some seriouse attitudes that come and go. Not much you can do about that

My break is pretty infamous for it. Seen some guys take it out onto the beach, parking lot, slashed tires, etc. I haven't been victimized too much although I'm not 100% local. Been chased off the break a couple times but I also don't think it's worth that because when the line up isn't chill I'm not happy. One guy was droppin in on a log, obviously pearling, so I continued to paddle out, towards him. After he awkwardly falls and gets back on his board he yells "next time i'll let the fleshin board hit you in the face!". I'm kinda like "sorry dude, i'll watch out". He then goes on saying "no you aren't sorry. sorry's what you say when you don't know better, you just didn't give a fleshin'". So more of this for like 5 minutes, I catch one in and go down the beach.

It's really stupid.

Had my van done twice. The main problem i find in the uk is thugs breaking into cars, vans. I have spoken to some locals and the local bobby and they think it is a gang of blokes, they sit in there cars watching surfers hide there keys then pick them up while you are in the water.

Happened to me once - at my local break, I grew up 6 houses away from it, surfed there all my life, and for many years surfed there whenever there was a swell - so could probably call myself a local, although IMO it doesn't count for sh1t. All it means is that you know the break well, so you're going to get more waves than a visitor anyway, you certainly can't demand respect because you surf somewhere a lot.

A couple of idiots started laying into me, telling me to clear off, chucking rocks at me etc, and then carried on shouting at me after I got out.

I decked one of them in the car park, and then WALKED home, because I lived right by the break

Never saw them again.

I've seen it a few times at Brighton Marina too. Pathetic behaviour, it's some of the worst waves anybody in the world surfs, so why get worked up about it? Just enjoy your surfng, and leave the attitude behind.

oh and incase you dont get close enough to see the number of extra digits....sounds like they're also the loudest but worst surfers in the line up?? If you see someone dropping in and blaming it on the other guy......ya got yourself a 'local' there boy.......(or a twat).

I wouldnt know really, I have never had trouble. people are always smiling and friendly. Im sure Bmth isnt a spot with localism problems. About this time last year I was sat on the shoreline taking a breather and watching the surfers a guy came out and asked why I wasnt surfing outback, should give it a go etc.

If I was a good enough surfer and lived up the beach from a break 'protected by locals' I would surf it, more because Im a spiteful like that than because I wanted to surf it. Im not sayinig it's right but some people have to be put it there place.

hah inbreds. it's funny cause right when i got out to the lineup and just glanced at the 'local' who was giving me bad vibes, he did look like an inbred. i kinda looked at him and secretly wondered if he was a homeless guy out on a surfboard, older guy with dirty long beard and dirty long hair. and yes he was loud too like sar mentioned. yelling at people when not going for a wave that i was in good positioning ie me =) . after a tiring paddle out i'll let a couple waves, although nice, just pass me to get a breather. dont need some weirdos yelling at me to go for a wave. nothing compared to your story sars. props to you for decking the guy tho, he deserved it.

Bournemouth isnt a spot where people will get a good kicking or have their tyres slashed (its far too open and visible for that) but when its working, getting onto the peak is almost impossible. The locals dominate the tiny take-off zone and if you're not known in the line-up, you dont get jack

I was at Putts once on a moderately large day, and getting out the water was taking a bit of time (big sucky backwash) and as Im struggling through the newbies and kooks, a guy slices right past my face laying spray into me. Scarily close to getting fins in the face

I realise that as a localism story it isnt much hassle... until you realise that the dick that did it was a well known surf instructor in the area, who teaches beginner, improver and advanced classes. Not very intelligent to be hassling your own potential customers is it?

I have seen that it is competative out there but never tried to surf outback.....me 'in control' of a surf board with so many potential targets on one peak??

I was just suprised as I had heard that it was a bit of a localism spot but people were all chatty and smily, spose I wasnt trying to surf 'their' peak
