Millpond:
n: a pond formed by damming a stream to provide a head of water to turn a mill wheel

Generally built in rather sheltered localions and, hence, associated with being quite calm and flat.

thats a big part of the reason why theres loads of top notch hawaiian surfers and you can count the world class british surfers of the last 40 years on one hand. Theres probably plenty of locals where you are who dont stand out much in hawaii but could breeze through most uk competitions.

Having said that there is usually constant swell here this time of year, my local indicator beach hasnt gone that flat for weeks, and has been well overhead maybe at least half the time.

dude somtimes small waves can be fun too ride and harder to stay on if u are a short boarder which gives u somthing different some of the time.
i do love surfing bigger waves more but some wave that u can surf is better than no wave at all

Not to disagree, but here in Florida we don't get too many big days. Still there are several world class surfers from here. I remember some kid named Kelly that grew up about a 100 miles south of me. I heard he turned out to be a some what decent surfer.

Yeah its warm here most of the year. I just got back not long ago from a surf, and the water was 82 degrees. Around Late December to February our water temps are usually in the low to mid 60's, but sometimes dip down to a bone chilling high 50's. I'll skin it down to about 67.....after that I get out the dreaded wet suit. If it gets in the 50's I keep my ass on the beach.

well i dont know farenheit but i think 50 is about 10 in celsius, which is warm for winter here, warmest we get is about 16 degrees in summer (about 60F) so most people here are in wetsuits all year round, and seriously thick suits with boots gloves and hoods in winter, that kinda hinders your surfing development a bit

Damn now thats cold. I hate wearing wet suits, and have never wore boots, gloves, or a hood.

my name is hawaii sucks except surf. i know the surfing is good.

anyway, that last shot doesnt look too bad. maybe like a 4 ft face? not sure.. still too boring to surf it. but im used to paddling past the reef to get to the waves, and im a lazy ass so the waves must be worth it. thats probably not as bad of a paddle.

small waves are boring, it is harder to stay on but why would i want to? the damn thing is moving like a gradma. its like going to the kiddy rides when youve already gone on the ultimate one. you cant go back. i remember lingboarding was fun wen i was a kid, and i havent done it since, but i suppose i can see why its fun when the waves dont usually get very big.

why dont you guys snowboard? i wish i could do that.

cos we rarely get snow by the coast, and when we do its not enough to ski on.
