central and south america surf trip - any tips appreciated

i am going on a surf trip for about 4 months, starting in baja and want to go all the way down pacific coast to peru, any good spots, accomadation? surf camps? any general travel tips for the area? wot wetsuits, if any do i need to bring? any areas to avoid? best time to go to a particular country? any good sites to go see if, god forbid, theres a flat day?

also does anyone no any charitys that require short term volunteers for two week periods?

Remember to protect your gear on holiday too, get good travel insurance that can cover you board & suit as well as yourself.

If you live in the UK go for Offsure, the cover liability as well.

travellers insurance is a good idea, specially if you're going to be travelling that long, you never know what might happen, once you make it to Peru, the north has awesome, long, perfect lefts, but only from december to march, mancora is nice but extremely crowded, try organos, cabo blanco, lobitos(this one works the rest of the year), then work your way down, check out pacasmayo and poemape if you can, then chicama, huanchago is nice, then down to south of Lima, Punta Hermosa and San Bartolo have plenty of nice waves, specially in punta hermosa. As for the volunteering, i heard from people that most these places you gotto pay daily from 5 to 15 USD, to cover lodging and meals anyway although you're volunteering and some even you have to pay a fee to get in. good luck with that!

Ecuador has WARM water so no wetsuit needed there at least. Just when you get to peru the water gets cold. Ecuador is a great surf destination with lots of reef and point breaks and the best months to be there are jan, feb and march. If you want to get alot of surfing done I would recomend you hire a surf guide, << URL removed >> has the best accomodations and transportations etc. If you want to do it on your own you could go to a place called Montanita but there you will be stuck surfing this one break that is crowded.

I would like to suggest coming to Panama for your trip.
We offer all inclusive surf packages that include transportation, lodging, and meals for under $1,000/person for 7 nights. Tours are private and a local surfer guide will escort you and your crew to all the best know and lesser known (Secret, shhhh...) spots on the Pacific and Atlantis coasts.
With the shortest distance between the two coasts, you can find good waves on both. Any time of the year is good for waves as when one coast is off, the other is usually on.

So you're trying to say that as soon as water hits peru it turns cold?????????
it's tropical till about lobitos, water stays warm all year round in the mancora area for example, and further south you don't need to wait for surf seasons, we got waves all year, and it is in summer months(jan-march) that wetsuit is not needed.

There are some great places to visit along the whole stretch but do take in Nicaragua as well its an awesome place, and one of my preferred spots, hardly any surfers but waves that are bliss.
