Moving to Sydney

Bro I am out in North Curl Curl and it only takes me about 40-50 mins to get to work (North Sydney) and was BY FAR the better choice. Better to be closer to the beach and worry about getting to work later

Not sure if it is an 1hour 20mins but it is a long way bro. Honestly moving out here is the best thing, its just such a good atmosphere out these ways and just awesome Just save for a cheap car and then you are sorted and can go visit her whenever

I stayed up in Dee Why on my last trip there. Really nice and gorgeous weather in June, but a bit difficult to get around w/out a car. I'll try living in Manly for a bit, see how things go and move around as needed. Would gumtree.com.au be the best place to look for a used board? What shapes are you guys running out here?

There are quite a few surf shops in the area that sell second hand boards too. Dripping Wet in Manly (on the beach front) has quite few, as does Aloha etc. Of course they'll be slightly more expensive as they are the middle man for the sale but there will be more to pick from.

So do ppl not surf at sundown in Sydney? It seems everyone started turning in at Manly around 7pm. That's a bit of a bummer considering I'd be surf after work rather than before.

Well considering that it gets dark at 6 - 6.30 I'm surprised people are staying till then. I'm waiting for daylight savings to kick in so that I can start going after work (which is 1st sunday in october if i am not mistaken), because being a weekend warrior sucks. But I work in North Sydney so by the time I get home its dark, but recently its starting to have a light when I get home and that extra hour will be perfect for a 1 - 2 hour dip after work "hopefully"

Gotcha. Well as soon as I get to Sydney I'll be rebuilding my quiver. Probably get a 9'0 longboard for roller days and probably buy a nice fish. I'm not sure as to what measurements work best out there, so I guess I'll just be peeking over at others and see what they're running. Do you recommend anything for a beginner shortboarder that's had plenty of longboard experience?

My opinion, (but shared amongst many) is that fish don't work in Sydney, they are more for Californian point breaks. There was a fish phase going on a few years back but now you don't see many of them. Guys that want more volume tend to get a shortboard with more in it. A longboard is good for those tiny/flat days for sure.

I noticed when I was there (especially at Dee Why and Manly) that the waves pitch a lot quicker than our waves here, so I pearled the first one after going down the face. After that nice rinse cycle, I got the hint and started bottom turning a bit quicker. Will a traditional 9'0 noserider do just fine out there for small and big (double-overhead) days? or should I really start taking the time to pick up shortboarding?

I don't know mate, never ridden a big board like that over here. Saying that I do see longboards out in all sorts of conditions but less when it's very big. Although some of the biggest waves I've seen ridden here have been by log riding hell men sitting way out the back.

Long Reef and Collaroy have some longboarding waves that are a bit too fat for the short boarders but most of the other breaks are just like you say, they pitch fast, especially Curl Curl.
You'll be fine I'm just biased towards the shortie.

Alright thanks for all that. Any good surf shops out there that gives private lessons? I'd like to try working on some shortie things. (Longest board I ever surfed was a 7'0 semi-gun)

there are stacks of surf beaches in sydney. down south you got wollongong and cronulla. in the shire it is 30 mins from the city and it is pretty relaxed. the traffic aint bad but once you cross the st george bridge welcome to jams.

property prices have already shot up in the shire so im not sure how much you can afford.

I'm in Manly now, and I went over to Surfers HQ and it seems like NONE of the shops in the area carry Wetsuits in my size. Do they not make MS suits here? Grrr. Maybe I can try to squeeze into a small, and I think a full Medium would be too long. Other than that mishap, I'm picking up a 7'3 squash-tail fish to rail on for a bit at Manly til I make my way down south.

They should do as I have a 'MS' O'Neill Psycho II (bought at Dripping Wet in Manly), that's the equivalent of a Rip Curl 'S'. The cheapest wetsuit deals are probably over at Surfection in Mosman on Military Road.

I went over to Dripping Wet and found a few suits in MS after reading this thread. I picked up a new Xcel 2/2. Thanks btw! Now I'm torn between a 8'0 minimal or 7'3 fish for the small days.
