Is a 7'2 board considered a longboard.

Been surfing for about a month now. Its so much fun. First time i went out i rented a 5'10 board. I managed to stand up 2 or 3 times but mostly i fell. So i talked to some guys and they sayd to get a bigger one. I bought a 7'2. Just wanted to know if that is considered a longboard or a shortboard. thanks in advance.

Depends on the shape but 7'2 isnt long or short - it'll be a funboard or mini-mal probably.
If its got a pointy nose, its probably a funboard and if its got a rounded nose, its a mini-mal

Okay, so its a bit more complicated than that, but thats the simplest answer I can think of!

Hello you, surfers comunity!

I`m also going to buy a board, I`ll surf in La Coruna, Spain, for almost 6 months (I`m going to surf as much as i can, maybe everyday..), so I have one quesstion: WHAT KIND OF BOARD SHOULD I BUY?

I think that after 1-2 monts of every day surfing I`ll surf "good", so I want to buy board that could give me fun after first steps... But, for the other hand, I need to learn how to surf.. So? Which board is ok? Please, don`t write that I should buy another, shorter board after few months..

I don`t know to much about surfing, but I thing that a board abot 7`` will be apropiate. Am I wright?

It depends on 'how' you want to surf.

I would recommend a short, thin Mini-Mal (like mine!!) This will be easier to get to grips with than a shortboard and will give you more fun for longer.

It'll also be suited to a much wider range of waves so you'll be ABLE to use it more often.

You could get a long, thick shortboard too, but Mini-Mals rock!!

I love the board its fun and pretty easy to ride. Im trying to learn how to do turns now. Just to let yall know where i surf. I surf at sebastian inlet, FL. Its a nice place very cool.

Is NSP a good make?? I have been looking at there shortboards for my second board.

I think its pretty good. Ive had some bad wipeouts and it barely has a scratch on it. Its very forgiving with things like denting or cracking. I bought mines brand new for $389, so they are defenetly a good deal. What size are you going to get?

Mini-mal is the best for learning on - big volume for paddling, easy to catch waves

Then, after first steps (month?)

A touch more than a month my friend....
After a couple of years, you might get to 'average'.

Okay, seriously, after a month on a mini-mal you should have catching waves and standing up sussed... then comes the more difficult tasks of turning onto the face of the wave, and learning how to control the board. Your mini-mal will still be suitable for this, and that should keep you learning for six months to a year.

Well, fun is what its all about
But, sadly, a universal board doesnt exist. There are too many combinations of waves, wind, break etc etc. Thats why people build up quivers

For me, my most universal board is my 7'4 funboard (half-way between a mini-mal and a shortboard) and that should suit you... once you can surf the mini-mal

NSP aren't REAL surfboards (in the strictest sense)

They are plastic, mass produced boards which (as per about a million posts on this forum) are almost indestructable!!

They are reasonable boards to learn on, but once you get into serious turning & tricks you will outgrow them.

A big-volume mini-mal is a great board to learn on - as is a fun board. But as drowning says, there is no universal board. A mini-mal/ funboard would be about as close as you can come.

My mini-mal is 7'5 but it's thin and fairly narrow which makes it fast and loose - it's not a beginner's board (although it's forgiving enough to learn on).

FUN- that's what it's all about, you will be having the time of your life from the second you paddle into your first wave (even whitewater) so I wouldn't worry about 'having to learn before having fun'.

So after your advices I`m going to look for some used minimal in Spain.. It want be easy, because I don`t know any surfer there... But I live in Poland so I`ll organize something..

Your English is sooooooooo much better than my Polish!!! Don't EVER hesitate to "wing it" in English. We read you just fine!

I don't know about boards. What we use here (Oregon, USA) are longboards. Typically, 9' 6" or thereabouts.

But that's because of the surf, and too because half the surfers are 55 or older.
