What fins?

What fins?

Postby monster » Mon Sep 15, 2008 12:43 pm

I snapped a fin over the weekend so I think that's a good excuse to spend some money and get a new set!

I'm about 5' 6" and weight about 10.5 stone. I ride a Circle One minimal which is 7' 3" and has a fairly narrow tail (thruster set-up) plus it has DFS fins at the mo.

I'm just getting to the point where I can turn the board both ways, but I'm by no means tearing it up yet! I have the problem that the board seems to bog down a lot but that might just be to do with positioning of my feet (to far back) or it nose dives, so too much weight at the front - when I get it right it's fast, but mostly it just bogs down.

Anyway, I can't decide what fins to get - the two sets I have in mind are the FCS DHD-2 (glassflex) or the FCS M5 IFT.

Which one's would be best to help me to progress? or to help keep the back end alive?

I want to get to the point where I can go really fast and turn hard (but that's probably going to be on a different board!)

Cheers

With that type of board and the level at which you've described your surfing i'd be surprised if you will notice the difference by upgrading the fins.
If you can afford it then think about upgrading your board instead. If you can't the stick with the cheaper fins, although i have not heard of dfs fins before.

As I've only had the board for a few months I think the missus would have a head fit if I went and bought another one! I bought this one as a package deal until my surfing improves.

Perhaps I'll just stick with the cheaper ones for now then.

go to the fcs website, they have a little checklist thing to help you find what fins will work for what type of board, experience level, average wave size, and what you want it to do

DFS fins come with all Circle One boards - they're plastic cheap ones (same mount as FCS). I changed my circle one 6'8 board fins to FCS M5's. I'd love to say they make the board rip better, but maybe it's because I've gotten a bit better on the shortboard!! I think the tailpad I put on at the same time helps more!

M5s would be the obvious choice as they're supposed to be the standard all round fin and then you will have something from which to compare other fins.

Yep DFS fins are junk plastic ditch em, FCS wil fit snug and the safest choice with the best profile would be the M3's second is the M5's ,allso what keel fin do you have?? Changing it can make a world of differance.
