Somthing thick and no longer than 9-9.6 and no shorter than 8! Other than that, ther is not much else to say.

I'll add - how do you want to end up surfing?

Progressive or traditional? You'll want to focus on one or the other at first.

For traditional go single fin and thick. For progressive go tri-fin and a little thinner.

Since you're 138, I'd say even a 7'9 funshape can work well for you. Just remember that funshapes in good condition are very hard to come by used, so if you see one in a shop, don't hesitate.

I'd say 8-9 ft funboard, I'm 5'8" (150llb) I found a friends 9'6 just to big to lug round, 9'2" was ok to get going on.

Watch for the rails, smooth curved not to sharp, squareish tail, no noseriding concave section either etc.

You also want something thick and wide rather than thin/narrow, floaty = good for a starter.

BTW theres a huge difference just between an 8 and 9 ft board...
