Rolling is by far the best method, if you don't find a rip/deep section you can paddle out in.
Also, by going turtle, the way the board is shaped when upside down, you shouldn't really get pushed back and the wave should glide right through you.
Though, just like duck diving, even when you roll (turtle, eskimo roll, kayak roll), it works best if you have a bit of steam going forward to propel you through the wave.
