New longboard fins

Maybe about 3 months ago I got over a broken arm after I ate it on a rock jetty, and luckily all that happened to my board is that all but one fin broke in half. I have been using my friends extra (crappy) fins. So any way does anyone know a good fin style/legth/size/brand for my 9'0 longboard, I want speed and maneuverability.

for a 9'0" board I would say a nice 8" all round fin would do the trick for you.

Generally - the longer and wider the fin, the more drive, power and stability you get. The shorter and narrower the fin. the looser and easier the board becomes to turn.

There are all sorts of shapes that give varying degrees of each.

A cutaway fin is not one I would recommmend though - the lack of surface area means you are not getting much drive or stability in the wave and the fat tip means they are not great to turn. They look sweet but not very functional as fins.

look at "true ames" in the US - they have a great collection of fins.

well I duno jonny, I kinda like cutaways, but you really need more power fed from the wave, and in some juice it makes the board more fun.

I only rode one with one wave, that's just kinda what I have infered from it, kinda pivitol, loose, and not very drivey

Cutaways do best with a 2+1 setup, they need the sidefins to give them extra drive. They don't work well as singlefins.

Yes, cutaways are different and better suited to a 3 fin setup, but for a 3 fin setup I prefer a shape like Fluid Foil's "fatboy"; also heared them refered to as football fins and a bundle of other names.

For a single fin setup it is hard to go past the simple yet effective dolphin style fin design...

Phil Way from Fluid Foils stated that there fins "are hand foiled from a panel of fibre glass. They are individually marked out and cut to shape then the foil of the fin is sanded into shape using a couple of different sanders and various types of sandpaper. This is all done by hand and eye so each fin is completely hand crafted to create a controlled flex and responsive fin to help lift the performance of your surfboard".

I think they are, but that is one of the benefits of buying custom made products... most of the people ridding Mick Carabine's longboards in Wollongong use them... never really seen two alike... even one that I sore using the same floral cloth as mine looked different, the shape/profile was the same but the overall look different!

I like the look of the "Chopper fin" for my 9'6"... would like to get my hands on one next time I go home and give it a try...

Try the turbo tunnel. It gives you awesome stability and with no drag. I am new to surfing so for the puddles I surf down here I need all the help I can get.

If you have a look at the post from Jonny (a.k.a. Loose Fit), you will read this opposing view. I have read many reviews both for and against the Turbo Tunnel’s, maybe Jonny can shed some light on why he takes this stance… Personally I don’t like them which is pretty unfair to say as I have never used one… but I like a more personal feel and mass marketed products just don’t appeal to me.

if you're new to the whole surfing thing, how do you know that you're getting awesome stability and no drag with it if it wasn't marketed the same way?

Man, you guys are harsh on the new guy. All I know is I feel more stable on it and just launch through a wave. Maybe it is all just in my mind but who cares. When it all boils down it is just fun. Plus my last fin broke needed a new one and figured hell give this a shot.

I think you must be lucky that you only got a broken arm. And I think you should be thankful that you're safe rather than being thankful to your surf board.

Believe me there are no definitive answers but I would suggest this , see if you can get something as a progression from your old broken fins and look at what direction you want to take your surfing to in your normal surfing habitat.
What is the system in which you had your fins? I assume they are a removable style since you are using your friends fins

The placement of the centre fin and the side bites will make a huge difference the information about size given in the previous posts is useful , I like fluid foils but I would do everything I could to try some other designs of fins till you get something that suits your personal style.

BTW If the board is let's say "inefficient", fins are only going to make a minor superficial difference might be an opportunity to look at the whole package :woot:
