anyone ride side bites only?

has anyone tried riding with larger side bites only? i just got a new takayama ehukai and it has the 2+1 fin setup and i've been riding it like that and just wondered about trying something different. maybe i should also try it with a single fin. any info on the side bites only would be helpful.

if anything, i'd just ride it as a single fin. play around with the placement to get the looseness/drive you want. farther forward (towards the nose) in the box, looser; farthe backward in the box, driveyer. with a longboard, i'd rather surf just a single fin

I put some CR 5-1/4” twins on my Walden Mini Magic with no center.
Only tried it one time, didn't seem to work very well.
Think the fins were too far forward and board has too much tail rocker.
Might try it again sometime, maybe even with a small trailer.
Only way to know really.

Sidebites are small fins (3-5") that are common on performance longboards. They compliment the larger center fin by providing additional manueverablity and hold. Longboarding purists (Single Fin Afficionados) often refer to them as "training wheels".

Faf, counting today, just how much longboard experience do you have? Please don't assume that anyone who rides a longboard only rides longboards. When its 2 ft and 14 seconds, I'm riding my longboard. When its shoulder high and 6 seconds, I'm riding my shortboard. Both are fun.

I've ridden with only the side fins. There's nothing like sliding the tail out on the only critical drop of the day. Ended up putting my elbow through the deck of my gf's surfboard. Haven't tried it since.

Don't try sidebites only, they are too far forward and small, all that will happen is that you will slide sideways and fall off, but since the board is sideways it will tumble on top of you.

If you want to try a different set up, try moving the fin up to loosen it up. Also, buy a cutaway, they turn much sharper than traditional fins.

Lastly, I take off the sidebites on small or mushy waves, only use them if the waves are steep or hollow to hold up a little better.

Yeah, side only will have no drive. try a single, 8.5 cutaway, will be loose, responsive, and fast. start with it 3/4 of the way back in the fin box...up for looser, back for a bit more drive.

sidebites are a waste if you ask me, they just don't add more than they take away. my opinion of course, and they are like a-holes.
