Yes on the ESA. I sent the guy an email asking for a good surf shop in Daytona - Jacksonville or a shaper. If he comes back at me with a shaper you can at least call him and chat. A good surf shop should also be able to set you up nice.

Try Kembalis, in New Smyrna Beach. I just bought a Walden 9'4" glass board for $595, they had alot of boards even cheaper, also Red Dog has some used long boards.

Definitely having second thoughts about it now. Might juts go with the Maverix, a ton of guys around here have soft-tops and NSP's so I think I wont get laughed at haha. Just don't really want to drop 500 dollars on a longboard. Haven't checked out Kembalis though, will do when I have the time.

Well at least you considered it and did not just buy on a impulse. Do me a favor......If you go to Kembalis ask them why you should not go with a cheap popout? Really, I would be interested in seeing what they say. I know when I looked for my first board. I asked about the few cheap popouts at a few different shops. They just said "those are crap" and steered me to the second hand boards. I have never ridden a cheaper popout so I really do not know how they ride.

What I do know about the soft boards is if you really have no more desire than to go straight they are the board for you

Oh I understand they are cheap haha. If they have a nice used longboard for 400 or so I will probably get it. I'm just really in a good position to spend more than that. Not to mention I am really counting on that rebate check to come in, if it ever does I don't think I'll get a new board without that check right now.

There should be a bunch of boards in there. I picked up a carefully used epoxy longboard for $250 at one of the local shapers shops. To be honest, I put more dings in it in 3 months than it ever had. If you don't mind second hand, try the craigslist for your area.

Hey just a note on the Maverix 9' longboards , I have surfed for quite a few years and started getting into longboarding this summer at Ponce on a freind's 9'8" Takayama. I was hooked. I already had 3 boards in the quiver so I was looking for a cheap beater longboard. You have some great options locally with the Longboard House right down the road, and there should be tons of used ones on craigslist. I am from SC but surf Ponce whenever I can when the waves are on. I went to my local Sam's Club and in the back they had 9' maverix longboard. It had been damaged on the nose and had slight delam on the tail. No fins, no leash and bag was ripped. They had marked it down to like $140. I went and found the manager and offered $100. They accepted my offer and I took it home. I bought used fin at surf shop for $20 and a ding repair kit for about $15. Took about an hour to repair, and I am no pro when it comes to board repair, lets just say she is a good cook with a straight set of teeth. My expectations for this board were very low. I thought it would be fun when the waves are small to goof around on. I would have never paid full price but figured for $135 all in, it was worth it. When I took it out the first time I was blown away. I love this board! It is awesome, especially for the money. I think they must have mass produced a decent shape. I was in overhead surf a few days ago and it was all over it. The glass job holds up against dings pretty well. Go figure. Am I missing something? I searched the internet and many forums and could not find one honest review on how these boards actually surf. If you can get one damaged or marked down a lot, I say go for it.

I took this board to Florida this past week and had 4' to occasional overhead surf and I must reiterate that the shape is not good, it is awesome. I gave it to a friend of mine to try out and he gave me his 9'6 Takayama. He immediately was blown away by the performance. It is the easiest board to ride and maneuver on i have ever surfed. I worked the face from top to bottom with a lot of speed on some large sets. I can't believe they have such good performance on such "cheesy boards". If your afraid of being seen as a kook don't try it, but I love it can't wait to find another one. We noticed that the rails are thinner on the maverix than the Tak. Weird find, If anybody else trys one out let me know. My friend and I are blown away. I think there are basics of fluid dynamics and then there is a lot of marketing bs. I would take this maverix chinese pop out over my buds tak any day of the week. and as for killing the "soul" of surfing, I don't feel that I have the obligation to subsidize any industry and if I was a shaper I would be setting up for new distribution and technology or get left behind all you are doing is delaying the inevitable.

My buddy with the Tak ordered a maverix longboard for $299. the next week added it to his quiver and loves it. Go figure. Don't believe all the hype, its the shape and construction quality period, not the endorsements, price, country of origin, or some mysterious impartation of soul by subsidizing a local business. Apparently there are real surfers and shapers behind the mass production. Thats cool to know that one of the best performing long boards I have ever surfed can be bought for about 1/3 the price of a custom or big name longboard. What am I missing here? Has anyone else ever surfed a Maverix longboard? Everybody who has ridden my 9' or my buddy''s 8' loves it. I had no positive expectations but this board and my superfish xl now rule the quiver. Damn imported boards, they are killing the "soul" of surfing aren't they.

Whatever works for the surfer regardless of price/name. However as a general rule cheap imports are not even comparable to an off the racker that has an established name let alone a custom shaped by an experienced shaper. Also as you experience as a surfer so does your critic on boards it's all about fine tuning and finding exactly what works.

Really?????? Last time i looked my shaper does custom for $450

Anyways it's always cool to find a board that works for you just thought i'd just drop my 1cent in there.

They sell those boards at Sam's and Costco. They're not really like NSPs or BICs, since they are PU foam shaped boards coated w/ fiberglass. I have a similar board, but it's a brand called Bilt. Supposedly it's "shaped" in South Africa. What it really is that a template is shaped and then copied by a computer, where a machine mimics the dimensions, contours, whatever and spits out some for mass production.

I am all for supporting my local shaper, but if this board was less than $150, its a steal, for it performs just as well as a shaped one. In my case, it wasn't a steal, since I bought it from a price gouging surf shop for close to $500, while my local shaper probably would've given me the same board for $400. I was an idiot back then.
