Building the 'Hotkurl' 10'5"

Building the 'Hotkurl' 10'5"

Postby Roy Stewart » Mon Feb 25, 2013 4:31 am

Here are the three internal panels for the 10'5" Hotkurl. Three layers are used rather than the usual two, so that they can be made thinner, this allows them to be bent more easily to the required rocker and the bottom concave.

The central panel has frames and blocking running athwartships. Since the central panel is on the neutral axis, fore and aft orientation is not necessary for strength.

Roy,
you've heard it from me before and you'll hear it from me again: It's tremendously appreciated that you share photos and information like this. It reveals things to someone like me, who knows almost nothing compared to you, that are very interesting (and would go unknown without your sharing). Thank you. You are a master craftsman.

( comment - I like Roy as a person and I like the fact he does his craft with dedication skill and honesty - why else would he now post the above pic [and i'm sure we have all watched at least some of his videos])
Roy I once again salute you and hope you achieve that which makes you more than content.

So for now, as we say in Wales - Hwyl 'i chi'

Thanks Esconsar, I think that it's safe at least to say that I'm not as bad as some people claim.

Funny that, your shape reversed is the shape of my very first board made of solid balsa back in 1958, the balsa was culled from life rafts of the old warships, they were balsa beams covered with tin which was riveted over the wood. the board appropriately enough was nicknamed "the can opener."

... and little did you know that moving the fin to the nose and then standing backwards would improve performance...

I was only nine at the time.
Just experiencing surfing at its purest and simplest.
I had to swim a mile before my father would allow me to have the board.
I also made a set of wheels so I could carry the back on the 1 mile trek to the beach
