Why choose short boarding?

Hello to everyone,

I’m a new surfer with just a few sessions under my belt, but the bug has bitten and I’m now ready to pick a direction and buy my first board…

So, it’s stand up for what you believe in time for you all…

Please tell me why I should choose to become a short boarder, sell it to me…… without slagging off long boards…..

na its good fun when you get the hang of it, but i found that in 2 years of short boarding and 1 year of longboarding im having more fun longboarding, but i still take out my 6'2" every now and again when it gets to big and choppy

ive only started like 4 months ago and i chose shortboardin-ive a 7'9 which is kinda big for most shortboards.my advice is try both out and c which you have the most fun with cuz shortboarders think shortboarding is the best and longboarders think longboarding is the best.

make ur own mind(but even after dat long speech i stil prefer short! )

the thrill of surfing rail to rail and getting loads of speed, taking off late and getting air drops into steep waves, throwing spray over you mates as they paddle out, being able to duckdive, getting into the steepest and most poweful sections of the wave,being able to fit your board in the passenger seat of your car, much lighter to carry, and of course big floaters, vertical re-entries and airs.
Shortboarding is more of an energetic ride than than the mellow longboarding ride, both have their merits but theres no contest as far as im concerned.

Shortboarding, I have learned you can do more. Longboarding you sort of just cruze the waves, shorboarding you can ride them and do turns and such. If you get a longboard, eventually you will have to get a shortboard if you want to do more. So in my opinion....GET A SHORTBOARD!!!! even tho they are a little harder to learn on.

Mate, you are what you are, you'll be drawn towards one or other soon enough, but since you're so new to surfing you would be best getting a 'longer' board anyway and then after you can surf that you will have a better idea if you are a long or short boarder.

you need to try both short and long boarding, then make the choice for your self. that's what i did. what did it in for me was the manuverability of a short board. to this day i have trouble getting a long board to make the simplest turn. it's personal, worst thing is you get a short board and a long board.

You all seem to be singing from the same sheet, i.e. try both and see where it takes me...

Still, having been watching every bit of surf programe on sky of late I feel if I had to choose today I am leaning towards a shortie, simply for the movability and skill involved...

Still the only thing that kinda puts me off is being 6'2" and 15 stone... where all the shortboarders seem to be that much lighter. Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not a fatty doing loads of hard graft with my landscape gardening business, infact I'd dare to call myself pretty fit, 29 years old or not!!!

well im 6'3 and over 15 stonea nd do ok on a shortboard, just a matter of having the right board, most of those lighter guys would find my board a biatch to turn cos they havent got the weight to commit to it that i have, i'll never ride one of those little skimboard sized boards but i like to think i got maybe another 20 years or more of shortboarding before i have to join the nosewalking crowd.
