General Description
Folly Beach has got a decent break near the pier. The best spot in South Carolina is the Washout. It can suck or be epic, or knarly as hell. Best in fall and spring. Best at high tide. Watch out for currents at the end of the Island, don't go anywhere near the ends of the island. Stay near the pier or the washout. The rock jetties are mostly covered at high tide so watch out at high tide. Near the pier there are no jetties. Longboards catch nice rides near the pier. Shortboarders prefer the washout, it is generally a foot or so bigger there and has more barrel tendency. Lots of dolphins, sharks are not that bad, even though a 13 foot great white washed up dead in november. Oh yeah, don't speed, that cop will nail you. Stay 35mph or so. Some locals can be a little arrogant if its crowded, nothing to worry about. Ocean surf shop is layed back, helpful and seem to be cool, less attitude than the other shops. Its my local break, while I dream of more consistent surf in some exotic place, I am thankful for what I have here in Folly Beach, SC
Arguably the best surf spot south of Cape Hatteras and north of Florida. In winter you need 4/3 with booties and gloves. Some endure a 3/2 usually with a hoodie, boots and gloves. It is generally not that cold here. Only a few days below freezing each year, not unusual to have 70 degree days in december. Water temp last week was 48 degrees. Jan 09
