Kahutara is a break on the south side of Kaikoura and you will see it on the right hand side on the drive from Christchurch. It works best a low tide and gets south and south west swells throughout the year. Best in Autumn and winter. The wave breaks on a rocky reef so not really for newbies. It is a powerful wave and provides a good fast ride. Well worth a surf.
How to get there On highway 1 a couple of k's south of Kaikoura. If you hit the town you have gone too far. Access & Parking Info / CostPark right by the break, just pull off the road and head down the little track. Where to Stay Stay in Kaikoura is the best option. Plenty of accommodation here and places to eat and go for a beer. Equipment Hire Not sure about hire but there is a surf shop in Kaikoura. Surf Schools When its Flat? The usual tourist stuff in the area.
