Hikkaduwa has 3 main breaks : a beach break for beginners in the south.
A main reef break in the middle which van be very crowded.
Another reef break in the North, usually getting smaller waves and far less crowded.

How to get there
From Colombo airport :
Get a a taxi direct to Hikkaduwa,(70 USD) right on the coastal road, so you can't miss it.
Get a taxi to train station, and a train to Hikkaduwa. Once arrived in Hikkaduwa, get a tuktuk to take you to he spot.
Mambo if you want to party. (25 USD a nite)
Main Reef (less than 20 USD)

Plenty of options available you can negociate on the spot but everything is full between Christmas and New Year.
You can get a surfboard for 50 USD a week or 8 USD a day with http://www.rentasurfboard.com/
