The Firewire FST Lost Mini Driver. While preparing a for an Indo trip Kolohe asked for a short, fast and flat rockered little barrel buster for his quiver. Matt recommended the Rock-Up, but Kolohe felt it had more tail rocker than he wanted and needed something really quick for late drops into the tube with heaps of speed to make it from way back deep. Matt started with a 6ft Driver, took note of the nose rocker and outline measurements at 4" and 16" back from the tip, then he shrunk the board to a 5ft 8 and lowered the nose rocker at the tip and 12" back till it matched the 4" and 16" from before. Matt widened the nose until it matched up the same way. This produced a screaming fast low nose rocker with a forward placed outline, both of which produce amazing amounts of drive. The tail was then rounded off, but left the width the same. This gave a very clean, elliptical outline that would feel nice and loose inside the barrel. The Mini Driver performed as everyone hoped. Interestingly enough, one of Kolohe's mates (Taylor Clark) borrowed it when hecame back from Indo and used it in the US Nationals at Huntington Beach. He surfed it in 2ft slop all the way to a second place in the Open Men's division. The board worked in everything! The rapid response flex memory in the Future Shapes Technology used in these boards yields great speed through the turns whilst the parabolic rail configuration guarantees 100% return memory for years. Firewire surfboards feature some very distinct construction traits that set them aside form other boards currently available: 1) parabolic balsa rails 2) dual density EPS and advanced composite core The parabolic balsa rails flex at the start of a turn storing energy and rebound through the turn releasing built up energy in the form of speed. The spring back of the parabolic rails to the original rocker triggers rapid acceleration, like an arrow shot from a bow. The construction materials, a unique formulation of hi-tech epoxy resins and advanced composites mean that these boards maintain the lively feel you get with brand new polyurethane boards, but are up to 20% lighter and will last 5+ times longer. This manufacturing process has won environmental awards and has created a range of lightweight and durable custom boards that are quickly being recognised for their awesome performance, just ask Taj Burrow! What this all means for surfers is a step forward in the age old trade off of performance versus durability that has traditionally limited polyurethane boards. The nature of the core technology in these boards allows them to rebound in and out of turns with little loss of speed. The secret to improved surfing is maintaining and using this speed to go higher, bigger, longer or whatever does it for you! Firewire also won the SURFBOARD OF THE YEAR award at the recent SIMA awards - that's basically the surf industry deciding who has done the best job, and is an extremely prestigious award. Thanks to 10 years of research and the expertise of shapers Nev Hyman and Dan Mann the future of surfing is changing, these guys are calling this Future Shapes Technology, we like it!
